Bronny James, the 18-year-old son of NBA superstar LeBron James, is in stable condition after suffering a cardiac arrest during a basketball practice at the University of Southern California on Monday, according to a statement from a family spokesperson.
James, who is an incoming freshman for USC’s basketball team, collapsed on the court and was treated by medical staff before being rushed to a nearby hospital. He is out of the intensive care unit and recovering, the statement said.
“Yesterday while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU,” the statement said.
“We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information. LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an irregular heart rhythm. It can be fatal if not treated within minutes. The cause of James’ cardiac arrest is not known at this time.
James is a four-star recruit who averaged 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game in his senior year at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles. He joined a USC team that reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season.
His father, LeBron James, is a four-time NBA champion and four-time MVP who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. He has expressed his desire to play in the NBA with his son someday.
“Prayers to Bronny & The James family as well,” tweeted Damar Hamlin, a Buffalo Bills player who also suffered a cardiac arrest last year. “Here for you guys just like you have been for me my entire process.”
