Alexander Nemov, an international human rights lawyer accompanying Milashina was also attacked while they were covering Zarema Musayeva’s trial – mother to exiled opposition activists sentenced to five and a half years based on false charges.
Milashina and Nemov sustained brain injuries, fractures, stab wounds and other injuries during an attack by four attackers who warned them that continuing human rights work or else face death was either impossible or distasteful. Press freedom and human rights groups condemned this assault and demanded an investigation and protection for the victims.
Milashina is a journalist with Novaya Gazeta, an independent newspaper which has been subjected to violence and censorship in Russia. She and editor Dmitri Muratov received a Nobel Peace Prize jointly in 2021.
