Rick Froberg was a singer, guitarist and visual artist who was part of several influential post-hardcore bands, most notably Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes. He was also a member of Pitchfork and Obits. He was known for his impassioned vocals, complex guitar playing and unorthodox song structures. He also created album art for his own bands and others, such as Rocket From the Crypt. He was widely respected and admired by his peers and fans in the punk and indie rock scenes.
He formed Pitchfork with guitarist John Reis in 1986 in San Diego. The band released one album, Eucalyptus, in 1990, before splitting up. Froberg and Reis then formed Drive Like Jehu with the rhythm section of another band, Night Soil Man. Drive Like Jehu released two albums, their self-titled debut in 1991 and Yank Crime in 1994. The latter album is considered a landmark of the US punk underground and influenced bands such as At the Drive-In and the Blood Brothers. Drive Like Jehu broke up in 1995, but reunited for some live shows between 2014 and 2016.
Froberg and Reis reunited again in Hot Snakes in 1999, playing more raw and straightforward garage punk. The band released three albums between 2000 and 2004: Automatic Midnight, Suicide Invoice and Audit in Progress. They split up in 2005, but reformed in 2010 and released another album, Jericho Sirens, in 2018.
Froberg also formed another band without Reis, Obits, who played a mix of punk, surf rock and garage rock. The band released three albums between 2009 and 2013: I Blame You, Moody, Standard and Poor and Bed & Bugs.
Froberg died suddenly on July 2, 2023, at the age of 55, from natural causes. His death was announced by Reis on Instagram, who paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator.
