Alastair Stewart was born on June 22, 1952, in Gosport, Hampshire, England. He is the son of Yashvir and Usha Stewart, who were both doctors and immigrants from India. His father served as an officer in the Royal Air Force. He has a brother named Iain and a sister named Aelred. He grew up in Emsworth, Hampshire, where he attended a state primary school. He won a scholarship to Salesian College, an elite private school in Farnborough, where he excelled academically and became the head boy. He also developed an interest in politics and economics.

Alastair Stewart started his career in television in 1976 with ITV’s south of England company Southern Television in Southampton. He was a reporter, industrial correspondent, presenter and documentary maker. He recorded one of the last interviews with Lord Mountbatten before he was assassinated by the IRA in 1979. He also spent six weeks in Ford Open Prison to make a half-hour documentary.
He joined ITN in 1980 as industrial correspondent and soon became a newsreader and presenter for various programmes such as Channel 4 News, ITN News at 5.45, News at Ten, ITV Lunchtime News, ITV Evening News and ITV Weekend News.
