Sam McAvaney was born in Melbourne, Victoria Australia to Bruce McAvaney and Merry. His younger sister Alexandra was also born there the same year. His father is an esteemed sports broadcaster and commentator, having covered such major sporting events as the Olympic Games, Australian Football League Grand Final, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open. His mother was an educator until they divorced in 1991. Sam was raised in Adelaide, South Australia where his father relocated his family in 1999. He attended St Peter’s College – an elite private boys school – until graduating in 2013. Following this, he enrolled at University of Melbourne to study Media and Communications before eventually receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 2017.

Sam McAvaney followed in the footsteps of his father by entering media and production as a profession. Beginning as a broadcast officer at Tennis Australia in 2013, where he served for four years until 2017, his responsibilities included providing service to media and players, organizing press conferences, photo opps, training sessions management, resource provision and social network reporting for four Australian Open tournaments from 2013 – 2017.
McGuire Media offered him his first opportunity as an assistant producer, where he served for eight months up to December 2015. Assisting with production for VFL and AFLW coverage on Channel Seven. From October 2014 until April 2017 he worked as production assistant on Seven Network’s Spring Racing Coverage; providing assistance during Spring and Autumn Racing broadcasts.
He then joined SAS Seven Adelaide from April 2014 to October 2014 as a production assistant, where he assisted news operations with ingestion for news operations. Furthermore, McGuire Media hired him from April to September as a production assistant where he assisted production staff with all aspects of SANFL Season 2014.
From August 2013 to January 2014, he served as food and beverage attendant at The Highway Hotel where his duties included alcohol service, customer liaison, event preparation, workspace cleanliness maintenance and maintaining customer relations. From January 2012 until January 2013, he worked as tournament assistant at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club as general assistant of tournament management, player liaison liaison liaison as well as press conference assistance press conferences assistance social network reporting.
