Robert Herjavec was born on September 14, 1962 in Varaždin, SFR Yugoslavia (now Croatia), to Vladimir and Katica Herjavec.
He has a brother named Tomislav and a sister named Zdenka.
He spent his early childhood in Zbjeg, a village near the Hungarian border.
In 1970, when he was eight years old, his family fled the communist regime and immigrated to Canada with only one suitcase and $20.
They settled in Toronto, where they lived in a basement of a family friend’s home for 18 months.
He learned English by watching cartoons and sitcoms on TV.
He attended Richview Collegiate Institute, where he was involved in the student council and the math club.
He graduated in 1980 and enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he studied English literature and political science.
