Shirley Weber was born in Hope, Arkansas to a family of sharecroppers. Her father, David Nash, left Arkansas after being threatened by a lynch mob for standing up to a white farmer. Shirley Weber began her career as a professor of Africana studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) in 1972. She helped to establish the department and served as its chair for several terms.
