Shirley Weber was born in Hope, Arkansas to a family of sharecroppers. Her father, David Nash, left Arkansas after being threatened by a lynch mob for standing up to a white farmer. Her mother, Mildred Nash, was a domestic worker and a seamstress. Weber has seven siblings. She moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was three years old and grew up in the Pueblo Del Rio housing projects. She attended Manuel Arts High School, where she was active in student government and graduated as valedictorian. She then enrolled at UCLA, where she earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in communication by the age of 26. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college.

Shirley Weber began her career as a professor of Africana studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) in 1972. She helped to establish the department and served as its chair for several terms. She also taught at California State University at Los Angeles (CSULA) and Los Angeles City College before joining SDSU. She retired from academia in 2012 after 40 years of service.
