Abdul Karim Telgi was born on Friday, 29 July 1961 in Khanapur, Karnataka, India. His father was an employee of Indian Railways and his mother was Shariefabee Ladsaab Telgi. His father died when he was young and he had to support his family by selling fruits and vegetables on trains. He completed his schooling from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya English Medium High School in Khanapur. He then pursued B.Com and M.A. in Psychology from the University of Allahabad in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He moved to Saudi Arabia for seven years and then returned to India.

Career Highlight:
Abdul Karim Telgi started his counterfeiting career by making fake passports and visas for people who wanted to go to Saudi Arabia. He opened a company called Arabian Metro Travels at New Marine Lines in Mumbai and created several fake documents for the labourers who wanted to work abroad. He was arrested in 1993 for his involvement in a visa racket.
He then obtained a stamp paper license in 1994 and began to print counterfeit stamp papers. He appointed around 350 agents who sold the fake stamp papers to bulk purchasers such as banks, insurance companies, stock brokerage firms, etc. He also bribed several police officers and government officials to protect his business. The size of his scam was estimated to be around ₹300 billion (US$3.8 billion).
He was arrested by the Karnataka Special Task Force from Rajasthan in 2001 after a case was filed against him in Bengaluru in 1999. He was also found to be involved in several other cases across the country related to the fake stamp paper scam.
