Marshall B. Grossman started his career as a lawyer at Weber, Schwartz & Alschuler, a small boutique in Beverly Hills that fit his criteria. He soon found his first big case in himself – one that would lead to a fundamental rethinking of consumer class actions in California. He had signed up for a membership to the Playboy Club for $25. But then he got a notice that members could no longer put charges on their Playboy card unless they paid an annual $5 account maintenance charge.

After Playboy refused his request to waive the fee, he persuaded the lawyers at the firm to allow him to file a class action on behalf of the Playboy Club’s 500,000 members. The complaint charged Playboy with violating the California Corporate Securities Law, alleging that the money was being used to finance a new facility for the club in Los Angeles. He won the case and established himself as a pioneer in consumer class actions.

He went on to work at several law firms and co-founded the Association of Business Trial Lawyers in 1973. He handled cases involving Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, J.K. Rowling, Netflix, Apple, Cirque du Soleil, Billy Bush, Erin Roberts, and many others. He also won a judgment for the Agudas Chasidei Chabad against the Russian Federation to recover religious texts that were seized during the Bolshevik Revolution and World War II and testified at a House subcommittee hearing titled, “Exploring Resolutions to Disputes Concerning Indian Tribes, State and Local Governments, and Private Landowners over Land Use and Development.”

He was listed for more than a quarter-century as a leading lawyer in Bet-the-Company Litigation in The Best Lawyers in America, been top ranked by Chambers Global and Chambers USA, and made the Daily Journal list of the 100 most influential lawyers in California. He died on October 2, 2023.
