Robert Irwin was born in a middle-class family in Long Beach, California. He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947 before beginning his painting practice. He attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1948 to 1950, where he studied under Rico Lebrun and Herbert Jepson. He was influenced by Abstract Expressionism and developed his own style of abstract painting.
