Career Highlight:

Robert Irwin was one of the pioneers of the Light and Space movement, a variety of West Coast Minimalist art that was concerned with the visual impact of light on geometric forms and on the viewer’s sensory experience of the work. He started with paintings that explored perception and optical effects, such as his dot and line series. He then moved on to create site-specific installations that used fluorescent lights, scrims, acrylic discs, and other materials to alter the physical, sensory, and temporal experience of space.

He also designed outdoor spaces and gardens for institutions such as Dia:Beacon in New York and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. He was the first artist to receive the MacArthur Fellowship in 1984. He exhibited his work at galleries and museums around the world, including Pace Gallery, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Walker Art Center, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and others.
