Tim Wakefield Career Highlights:

Tim Wakefield was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as a first baseman in the eighth round of the 1988 MLB draft. He received a $15,000 signing bonus from the Pirates. However, he soon realized that he had no future as a position player and decided to switch to pitching full-time. He learned the knuckleball pitch from his minor league coach Phil Niekro and quickly mastered it.

He made his MLB debut as a pitcher for the Pirates in 1992 and had an impressive rookie season. He went 8–1 with a 2.15 ERA and helped the Pirates reach the National League Championship Series (NLCS). However, he lost two games in the NLCS to the Atlanta Braves, including the decisive Game 7.

He struggled in the next season and was sent to the minors. He was released by the Pirates in 1995 and signed as a free agent with the Boston Red Sox. He revived his career with the Red Sox and became one of their most reliable and durable pitchers. He played for the Red Sox for 17 seasons until his retirement in 2012.

He won two World Series titles with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. He was also an All-Star in 2009 and won the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010 for his humanitarian work. He retired as the third-winningest pitcher in Red Sox history with 186 wins and the all-time leader in innings pitched by a Red Sox pitcher with 3,006.

He became an assistant coach for the Red Sox in 2013 and worked there until his death in 2023.
