Dwight Twilley was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 6, 1951. He developed an interest in music at an early age and learned to play guitar and piano. He attended Edison High School and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, where he studied music and art. He met his lifelong friend and musical partner Phil Seymour in 1967 at a theater where they had gone to see The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. They soon began writing songs and recording together under the band name Oister.

Dwight Twilley Career Highlight

Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour left Tulsa and went to Los Angeles in 1974 to find a label. They signed with Shelter Records, a label co-owned by Denny Cordell and Leon Russell. They changed their band name from Oister to the Dwight Twilley Band and released their debut single “I’m on Fire” in 1975, which reached #16 on the Billboard charts.

They recorded their first album Sincerely with producer Robin Cable at Trident Studios in England, but it was delayed due to label problems. They also worked with Tom Petty, who sang backup vocals on their second album Twilley Don’t Mind in 1977. Seymour left the band in 1978 to pursue a solo career, while Twilley continued as a solo artist. He released several albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Jungle (1984), which spawned the hit single “Girls”.

He also collaborated with other artists such as Susan Cowsill, Carla Olson, and Roger McGuinn. He released his last album Always in 2014 through his own label Big Oak Records. He died on October 18, 2023, at his home in Tulsa after a long illness.
